The plain-English version

VoIP, cloud PBX, hosted, what's the difference?

They mostly describe the same modern phone system from different angles. Here's the jargon, unpacked.

VoIP

Calls travel over your internet connection instead of an old copper line. Clearer, cheaper, and far more flexible.

PBX

The switchboard that routes calls, extensions, transfers, hold, ring groups. Every business phone system has one.

Cloud PBX / hosted

That switchboard lives in the cloud, not as a box in your comms cupboard. Nothing on-site to power, patch or replace.

Softphone

An app on your mobile and computer that turns any device into your business line, so you can answer from anywhere.

Choosing a platform

Common questions

Good to know

What's the difference between VoIP, cloud PBX and a hosted phone system?

They mostly describe the same thing from different angles. VoIP means the calls travel over the internet instead of an old copper line. A PBX is the switchboard that routes those calls. Cloud PBX (or a hosted phone system) simply means that switchboard lives in the cloud rather than as a box in your office, so there's nothing on-site to maintain.

Should I use 3CX or Microsoft Teams Phone?

If your team already lives in Microsoft 365 and Teams, Teams Phone keeps calling in the one app they already use. 3CX is a great fit if you want richer call-centre style features, queues and reporting, or a system that isn't tied to Microsoft. We'll look at how you work and recommend the one that fits, we're not locked to a single vendor.

Can I keep my existing phone number?

Yes. We port your existing landline, and 1300 or 1800 numbers, across to the new system. Customers won't notice a thing, and porting is usually free with no downtime.

What happens if the internet goes down?

Calls automatically divert to a mobile or another number, so you never miss one. We set that failover up as standard when we build your call flows.

Do I need to buy new handsets?

Not necessarily. You can run everything from a softphone app on your mobile and computer. If you'd rather have desk handsets, we supply and set them up, and many existing IP handsets can be reused.

How much does a business phone system cost in Sydney?

It depends on how many people, how many simultaneous calls, and which platform suits you. Instead of a fixed price list, we look at your setup and give you a tailored quote so you only pay for what fits. No lock-in.
